As much as I love the ones I already own, lately the sight of three stripes is giving me a negative visceral reaction, and now this. Here, I bring you a bunch of cool styles from many of the other worthy brands in the sea. This street shot showcases the Nike/Sakai collab but these are similar enough. And please let me know if you have a favorite line or style that isn’t represented here! xx
Veja’s classic runners are even cuter with the baby blue accents.
Who doesn’t love an old-school pair of Keds (so giving me grade-school memories!)
New Balance ones like these never look tired and are so good with trousers.
I had these Euro-preppy K Swiss in high school and kind of miss them.
This Veja is more like a hiking boot/sneaker hybrid.
Mango’s kelly green number with olive and purple accents is really fun.
If you like simple, may I suggest this just-quiet-enough Nike pair?
Such a perfect Converse specimen.
These have a fun ’80s vibe and are almost like ice skates without the blades.
Here’s a cool air-conditioned style from Salomon that would be great now with chunky socks.
If you love Stan Smiths, try these Reeboks instead.
Nothing like high-top Vans, an old-school skater favorite .
If you like a little glam in your sneaker, how about this Re/Done one?
Nike’s Air Max are chic and bouncy
Here’s a classic Saucony with a subtle metallic detail
excellent! appreciate all the options at various prices and giving alternatives to Adidas.
know anything about the green pleated skirt in the first photo? (maybe watanabe?) THANK YOU
My guess is it’s Sacai too
How about Tretorn? Nylite plus leather!

Hokas are like walking on clouds. I wish they had cooler colors, but those are the sneakers for me. A close second would be Altra. Third would be Topo.
I live in my Hoka’s. The most comfortable sneaker I’ve ever owned.
I don’t want to love my HOKAs but I do. I had to start wearing them after foot surgery last spring. They are 100% not my kind of fashion (Vans, Converse) but wow, so good. And they come in wide. I had to start wearing skater girl carpenter pants to accommodate the fashion, but they also look fine to me with flares. I can’t seem to get it to work with trousers or any boot cut, though
Pointer on the (usually obnoxious) colors – the mens’ colors are better & the widths are the same, just take 2 sizes down from what you wear and the same width.
I live in my K-swiss. Got them a few years back as was tired of seeing the same adidas on everyone lol!
Thank you for this. Since Adidas obviously puts profits above taking a stand against antisemitic hate speech, buying other companies’ products is the best way to send them a message. For those who need brands with a wide selection of sizes, including women’s 12 and higher, Hokas are great walking shoes. I also love Asics for comfort and consistent sizing.
I just got the Sauconys in black and silver, and they are great and so comfortable!
I just bought the Sacony too. Last spring i injured my foot and I’m on my feet a lot for work, so finding comfortable shoes is essential. A plus is they look nice with black trousers.
Thanks for the post and for shining a light on how little Adidas is doing to stop supporting antisemitism. I love all my adidas but I will never wear them again or buy another of their products. This company breaks my heart!! Keep on supporting companies that don’t support antisemitism.
Thanks for this, Andrea.
Good post. Thank you. I would rather knit my own pair of running shorts—and I don’t knit and hand knit running shorts would be horrible—than wear my Adidas shorts one more time. Finding myself in need of new ones. I tend to have only two pairs at a time until they fall apart and right now both are Adidas. Ugh.
While I appreciate this, I purchased a pair of gazelles bc of one of your posts and through your link right before this whole mess and now I feel I cannot wear them! Aside from the considerable expense, they are very comfortable. Never ever wore them! I cannot return them, so I guess I’ll re-sell?
I am probably going to wear the ones I already own, but no time soon. Just not purchasing anything new.xx
Thank you for letting me vent! Just mad at “he who shall not be named” – I live in PA and the elections here are existential and terrifying! Even in NY – everyone please vote to protect women and vote against hate!
Can someone please explain this. Adidas shoes have a great fit on top of their dropping West. Is that what this is about? FYI, West is obviously manic and suffering. the media is taking advantage of that by following him around with a mic. Listen to Wests podcast with Lex Friedman.
Awkward Souls, a vegan-friendly brand I learned about through this blog (I think Andrea said she was friends with one of the owners)? Their selections are really sweet, my favorite is the light pink/red.

Oh yes of course!!!
I’m having a strong sense of attract/repel with those see-through Solomons. I’m bouncing between insanely good or just insane.
did I miss something? I thought Adidas had dropped Kayne?
After a ridiculously long time
yes, that’s true
And they still plan to sell the goods they have, just not under his name.
Yeah that’s in the link in the intro
Charlotte Stone Conway sneakers. In a single weekend, I got compliments on mine from a cool-kid first-grader, that first-grader’s chic teacher, a retired minister at our church, and the Trader Joe’s checker.
Adidas has a lot of Yeezy stock. In the group’s opinion, what would be a better thing to do with them? Donate them? Burn them? I hated how long they took to detach from Ye, but on a purely practical logistical level I wonder what else they could do with all that stock. (I’m Jewish btw.)
Is Puma off limits too??

Love the Veja hiking boots! Those may have to be an early Hanukkah present to myself! <3
I traded in my Hokas this summer for a pair of J-Slides — a brand I’d never heard of. I have all kinds of foot problems that have prevented me from wearing sneakers of pretty much any kind — the Hokas I could wear part of the day, at least — but the J-Slides are amazing. I even did 8 miles a day over cobblestones in Europe in them last month. I have the Maya and they are a GODSEND.
Nike makes me wanna barf right now too. Their billionaire chairman emeritus has donated 1.5 million to the campaign of Oregon’s anti-choice Republican candidate for governor.
Maybe we should all learn how to make our own sneakers!
Nike does make most of their shoes off inmates at Chinese prison camps. Go beyond
I’m a big fan of Allbirds, https://www.allbirds.com/. Sustainability is a major focus of the company and their range of styles is impressive.
Where can I get that pleated zipper skirt?
Love all of these options and agree completely about Adidas. Anyone else grow up with one pair of shitty athletic sneakers they had to wear for the entire school year and now they have to have all the sneakers because that’s me. I love Converse platforms because I can’t wear the original version any longer (too flat). I just wore them with suit pants to a casual outdoor wedding and got tons of compliments + no foot hangover the next day. Converse Move sneakers are a nice alternative to Hokas for days when I want to be comfortable but not totally sporty. Seavees platform slip on sneakers are also comfortable and go with everything from jeans to dresses.
@adidas#DoBetter Trash your remaining Yeezy stock and donate an equivalent amount to a non-profit.
And remember 1933-1945.
How do we feel about Cariumas? I’ve been curious about them because they are another brand aiming for sustainability (and that Helen Mirren photo!). Lots of great choices here. Like a PP, I had one ratty pair all year as a kid and now want all the sneakers. I probably need several of the ones mentioned here.
Help! The Saucony is screaming my name but I cannot get the link to work. Does anybody know the specific style name and color??
Laura, Maybe you found the Saucony, but I believe it’s the Jazz 81 in grey/silver,
I have feet that are wide and I have a high instep so getting a truly comfortable fit is really difficult. I found the brand Kaanas and bought this pair: https://kaanas.com/collections/sneakers/products/madison-two-tone-athletic-sneaker-colordescription-1
I had to size up from 6.5 to 7 but they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever purchased and I get so many compliments – they look so cute with black or blue jeans. Love them!
