Top 5: Tamar Brazis, Editorial Director

The background: Tamar has an unusual specialty as a book editor — she’s the head of the children’s picture books division at Abrams, but she’s also got a background in rock ‘n roll photography (my favorite!). So not only has she put out some stellar kids’ titles like Heather Ross’ adorable Boys: An Illustrated Field Guide (which I recommend for girls and women of all ages) and the sweet new Rock & Roll Soul by Susan Verde, to name just twobut she’s also done cool books like Patti Smith 1969-1979 by Judy Linn (which I own and love), Danny Clinch’s Still Moving, and The New York Dolls: Photographs by Bob Gruen. We recently met for coffee at the insanely fabulous hidden gem, the Beekman Hotel (I really felt like we were in Paris, by the way), where we chatted like we’d known each other forever. She later informed me that she was an intern at Harper’s Bazaar when I was a writer there, and she dropped the daily industry newsletter (so archaic!!) on my desk every day. The she informed me that she is secretly obsessed with the Bachelor which made me love her even more.

Hometown: Chicago

Self-described style: Understated, with a little rock and roll. I wear jeans, a sweater, and my sixteen-year-old Frye boots almost every day.

Style icons: Monica Vitti for some old-school, Italian-film-star glamour and Cher for her confidence in every decade.

Things I can’t live without: For better or worse, I’ve done the exact same eye makeup every day since I was fourteen: A swipe of black eyeliner and mascara. I’ve tried every liquid eyeliner imaginable but nothing beats my L’Oreal Lineur Intense. I’m also evangelical for Mario Badescu’s Enzyme Cleanser, the amazing Glow Butter for maximum hydration (which I learned about on IWTBH!), and my woven, black TSE cashmere scarf that has served me for over twenty winters. Clearly, I’m a creature of habit. For music, Dave Godin’s Deep Soul Treasures is my desert island compilation.

Motto: Always travel light.

 1. Laura Mercier Tinted Illuminating Moisturizer “I don’t like to wear face makeup. But if I need an evening pick-me-up, this makes me feel ‘done’ and ready for a night out. It’s just the right amount of coverage and shimmer.”
2. Below the Boat L.A. to San Diego Map “Working in illustrated/photography books, I’ve accumulated quite a gallery wall in my tiny apartment, but the greatest conversation piece is my wood-cut bathymetric chart. I can entertain myself staring at maps forever, and this one reminds me of great memories on the California coast.”

3. Caudalie The des Vines “In the cold months, I wear deep peppery- or woody-rose scents like Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose. But in the summer, I can’t get enough of this. It’s fresh and clean with a hint of musk.”

4. ‘Sherpa’ blanket “My mother gave me this cozy throw and it’s affectionately known as “the nap blanket.” Its softness is immediately soothing and no movie watching is complete without it.”
5. Le Mieux Bio Cell Mask “I’ve never met a sheet mask I didn’t like and Le Mieux’s are my favorite. They make me feel pampered, hydrated, and glow-y.”
