The Perfect Sweater Closet

I know it’s a little late in the season (yay), but there is still plenty of time left for knitwear, and everything in this collection is evergreen. So I bring you ten classics that can take us all through many seasons for years and years. Let’s start with Everlane’s luxe turtleneck, that is both cozy and chic.
A Breton-inspired striped pullover provides a nice shot of Parisian classic-chic (and I perfect for a nighttime beach bonfire!)

It’s always good to have a grandpa cardigan on hand to wear loose or belted over a slip dress or trousers like here. And here’s a great skinny belt if you’re looking.

A thin turtleneck like this works under overalls, flannel shirts, so many things.

And then there is what I like to call a “nerdy” cardigan that you can wear completely buttoned up and tucked into jeans or a pencil skirt, open like here or even backwards, 1950s style. And a black one is more beatnik than prep.

Also a Nordic print like this gives a nice old-school ski vibe.

I love a classic Aran or “fisherman” sweater, and this cardigan version from Re/Done looks so authentic, right down tp the leather buttons.

V-neck cashmere sweaters are a must for me — I wear them alone, or over tees or button-downs. This camel is a great specimen and the price is right.

I love a good sweater coat for around the house or as an outer layer — you can’t get any better than the Capote by Lauren Manoogian. And last but not least, a good cashmere crewneck like this one from J. Crew will take you everywhere through almost all kinds of weather, and yes, even the (air-conditioned) days of summer. Plus, it comes in a gazillion colors.

  1. The problem with JCrew sweaters is they are just so short/cropped and hit me in the one of MANY areas I prefer not to highlight. Even the newest cardi which has such pretty colors is too short for me and I am only 5’6. Suggestions for a nice cotton cardigan that is a few inches longer and reasonably priced?

  2. Oh Andrea! That Capote by Lauren Manoogian has been on my wish list for years… it never goes on sale. It’s just so perfect!

  3. I love a good cashmere crew neck and have been thinking about a camel one. Some camel sweaters have a mustardy undertone (is that the right descriptor?) that I don’t care for—this Quince sweater is an appealingly muted camel shade, and I just might need to have it!
