Ten Fall Closet Staples on Sale

In an effort to cover all the end-of-summer deals while I can, I bring you the evergreens — pieces you would probably buy at full price, because you can wear and use them for years — at big markdowns. Madewell’s chunky/polished cardigan is great in both shades, and works with just about anything else you own. I’m thinking this oatmeal-y one would be perfect with white jeans to create the quintessential early fall look.

You can’t go wrong with an Il Bisonte bag in a rich brown (20% off!) that straddles the line between polished and rugged, to carry to work (whenever that happens), or just tote around on the weekends.

A silk buttondown like this can take you anywhere. Tuck it into any old jeans to dress them up in a pinch, pair it with a pencil skirt for a party. Tie it high over a slipdress, etc.

I already featured these chic waterproof  boots in black leather, but now I’m also loving this dark gray suede.

Sure, black wool coats go with pretty much everything, but there’s nothing like a camel one (in the right camel) to give a classic European richness. I would especially love it with white or blue jeans and that black silk blouse, and the snake shoes below.

Here’s a super chic pair of snake-print loafers for under $80.

Black jeans can work in many situations in lieu of trousers (just add the black silk button-down and loafers and you’re completely polished), or pair them with a tee and ankle boots for more of a slight rock ‘n roll vibe.

As soon as there’s a slight breeze, I reach for the scarves! Here’s a nice thin cashmere number to get you through all of fall and spring (and not-so-cold days of winter).

It may seem boring, but a soft cotton long-sleeved tee in gray, black and white is the thing you will reach for over and over again.  This one is pretty perfect and now only fifteen bucks, so might as well get a few. You’ll thank me later.

I love these fluid Annie-Hall-esque pleated trousers that are now just under $50 (in spring too!)

  1. LOVE this basics “review”. And you are so on pointe with the gray long-sleeves tee. I wear mine once a week in fall and spring!

  2. Thanks for the reminder about stocking up on Gap long sleeve cotton tees. Comfy and long-lasting. I think i have a few that date from when Gap began, faded, demoted to pj wear, but still can’t give them up.

  3. I used to wear black all the time because Lauren Hutton once told me to never wear beige- saying it makes older women disappear. For years I believed that and avoided anything oatmeal beige or camel. LOL Lauren ! Now that’s what I wear most- with heavy doses of white and faded light wash jeans. So love that cardigan and scarf !!!! Gotta get!

  4. I want everything here. Ok, maybe I can’t pull off the Annie Hall trousers, but the rest looks great. Makes me want to have somewhere to go (not happening in our locked down city). But I can wear a silk blouse to dinner in the kitchen, right?
