Finding The Grown-Up Stuff at American Eagle

In my ongoing quest to unearth affordable pieces that are actually grown-woman appropriate from various stores “for the kids,” I bring you a line-up from this high-school/college staple, known for its vast array of oversize flannel shirts and ripped jeans. I know many of you think overalls are for the under 30 set, period. Not so in my book! And this corduroy pair (in both the olive and gray) is a great fall staple with very little hardware that would be even more elevated under a blazer. p.s. everything here is (mostly way) under $100!

Here’s a cute denim mask set that would work with just about any outerwear.

This paratrooper-esque jumpsuit is pretty perfect as far as these things go, and I am picturing it with classic Stan Smiths.

I love the vintage-y feel of this little plaid jacket, that I would definitely wear as a layer under a puffer later.

These faded camo sweats feel like some more expensive ones I saw at Henry Lehr, and they’re chic enough to wear outside.

Who doesn’t love some old-school Hunter booties rain or shine?

This “sherpa” wrap would be just the thing for the airplane if times were normal, but I would throw it on just to watch TV!

These military-style jeans are giving me real Nili Lotan vibes (just buy them slouchy, not tight like in the photos!)

You can’t go wrong with a simple black denim jacket, which feels very Parisian with blue jeans and ankle boots.

A soft gray overall jumpsuit is a good way to elevate your around-the-house look.

This army green anorak has a military-liner feel and makes a great running-around piece, or layer in the winter (I love a hood under a coat that doesn’t have one).

  1. I have to give a shout out to AE blouses! When my teen daughter began looking for blouses to ‘elevate’ her look, we found a ton of AE pieces at our local Plato’s closet. We hadn’t heard of the brand before (she was an Aeropostale girl) and many of them flatter her curvier top: V neck, button down, many tie at the waist. This brought us into the AE store at the mall, where we also discovered Aerie. My style doesn’t suit these looks right now, but if you need flattering blouses on the cheap take a look!
