Marisa  is quite the badass. First of all, she’s the author of the New York Times best-selling graphic novel, Ann Tenna, Cancer Vixen as well as Just Who the Hell is She, Anyway? She’s also a New Yorker cartoonist (which I just love) and you may have seen her work in O Magazine, Glamour, The New York Times among others. Another reason to love her: a breast cancer survivor herself, she started The Marisa Acocella Marchetto Foundation, an empowerment program at Mount Sinai that funds yoga, qi gong, journaling, massage therapy, guided meditation, and lots of other alternative therapies, including the innovative “cold capping” which prevents women from losing their hair during chemotherapy. Check out her illustrated column “Tongue in Chic” on I definitely recommend following this powerhouse on Instagram @marisamarchetto. And now for her picks!

 1. Rick Owens leather jacket “It’s life during wartime and we women need our armor. Who is better equipped to equip us than Rick?”
2. Smith & Cult 5 Free Nailpolish in Dirty Baby “I’m a breast cancer survivor, so the fewer chemicals the better. And come to think of it, if you’re alive, that means you’re surviving so in that sense we’re all survivors. And while we’re all trying to detox our lives we still gotta have a little fun!”
3.  You Can Heal Your Life  –the original! “My mom bought this for me when it first came out. Now more than ever–a necessity. Because our health and happiness is in our own hands–and minds.”
4.  Joshua Sanders sneakers “I haven’t been able to wear heels since I had back surgery, and these kicks are so cool, I don’t miss them. Plus they’re comfortable. Plus I love them.”

5.  Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo in Creator “I love Hourglass. It’s a woman’s company created by a woman and she just launched this line. On top of it, she’s doing a Girl For Good program along with it. Every Lip Stylo has a name that’s empowering.”

Great choices and I have to thank you for referencing “cold capping” – I had never heard of this and I just passed it on to a friend who will be starting chemo in a couple of weeks. She is so very happy that there might be a chance to maintain her appearance and privacy while going through this very difficult time.
