Top 5: Batsheva Hay, Designer

So I was working with this cool stylist a couple of weeks ago and instead of the usual uniform of vintage Levi’s, Gucci slides and a cashmere sweater, she showed up wowing everyone in one of Batsheva’s dresses — a crazy tiny-floral number with super-puffed sleeves à la Holly Hobbie (but seriously in such a good way). Not sure if I could ever get away with one but this girl rocked it with her black Vans and armful of fancy gold bracelets. For more inspiration, check out the site and see how Batsheva so effortlessly throws her dresses on with classic checkerboard Vans. She also wears them with clogs, sneakers, Doc Martens, or heels. “A jean jacket is good on top, and some vintage clip-on earrings,” she says. Luckily, there’s a top available with more to come (that I would do with jeans and boots). I wanted to know more about the designer, so here you go: she grew up in Queens and is inspired by how her mom used to dress her in Laura Ashley and vintage calico dresses. After working as a lawyer for years, she decided to give this a try and started her line of slightly twisted mommy and me clothes in 2016. She’s also married to the photographer Alexei Hay and has two kids. So there you have it, and now for a little more insight into her aesthetic.

 1. Dr Martens Pascale Virginia in Khaki. “I love the just-a-little-off-ness of these. They are so sturdy for fall and winter, and so satisfying to break in.”
2. Laura Mercier Eyeshadow Stick in Amethyst. “I don’t wear much makeup and am terrible at putting it on. This stuff is really easy to swipe on has a nice shimmer.”

3. Swatch Eyes of the Swan sunglasses
“My husband got these for me, and at first I thought they were lame, but now I love them. The Swatch brand brings me back, and they’re so inexpensive and lightweight, and kind of cool in an ’80s Ray Ban kind of way.You can switch out the fronts too.”
4. Zabar’s Nova lox. “It’s Upper-West-Side magic. I eat way too much of it.”

5. Batsheva prairie dress “Although it seems frilly and statement-y, this dress is a real uniform for me. I love the comfort of cotton, of pockets, and of just having a lot of fabric on, especially in the winter. It is comfortable and good day or night, with Vans or heels. I have truly dressed like this my whole life. I design for myself, hoping there are enough like-minded women out there.”

Mamavalveeta, Um, said attorney here. I wear those Docs every day, often with dresses that are at least Prarie-reminiscent.
