Top 5: April Mellas, Co-founder, RIGit

I met April for coffee a couple of weeks ago and immediately liked her. Aside from just being plain nice, she also has a keen sense of humor and is just simpatico, or, to use one of my favorite Yiddish words, hamish. When she co-founded RIGit (with a hard g), the first completely genderless shopping app, with her partner Amy Bender, they set out to break the old fashioned rules about shopping in gender-specific departments. April always just wanted to shop for cute clothes, wherever — as she told me, sometimes she would browse in the men’s department and get strange looks from salespeople when she told them she was looking for herself. Cute clothes are cute clothes, after all.  April’s and Amy’s mission, is to create a space where people can embrace and express their true sense of self through what they wear every day. As she puts it, “RIGit is a movement, a belief, a safe space for everyone regardless of age, gender, sexuality – it is about inclusion and self-expression.”

 1. Agent Nateur Deodorant“It might sound crazy to spend $21 on something you smear on your armpits, but then again, finding an aluminum-free deodorant that stops me from sweating and smells like a fancy spa feels a lot like hitting the jackpot. So.”
2.Dapper Designs Dakota Ring “I love everything about this jewelry company but this is a personal favorite. I like rings that make a statement but in a subtle way. I always wear more than one and this works with almost everything else I put on.”

3. LAFCO Feu de Bois Candle “My girlfriend has a thing for candles, and brought this one to my apartment under the strict condition that I do not light it unless she’s there. But considering it smells exactly how you’d imagine sitting next to a crackling fire in a wood-paneled cabin in Vail, Colorado would — could you blame me for bending the rules a bit?”
4. Wusthof Classic 7-Inch Chef’s Knife. “I know you’re supposed to have different knives for different foods, which means I’m probably using this one all wrong, but it’s lasted me 8 years (and counting) and cuts through every piece of cheese, chicken, lettuce, and everything in between with ease so I don’t see myself replacing it anytime soon.”

5. RIGit sweatshirt. “This is my favorite hoodie! While I’d like to say it’s because of the inclusive message that clothes really have no gender, the reality is that it’s just really, really comfortable.”

It’s always made sense to me to have a much more flexible view of fashion, especially classic items. Like jeans (all I wore in college was my 501’s), oxfords, button down shirts, hoodies and tees. Bravo to April and Amy for being innovative and practical!
