My Unlikely Love Affair WIth Patagonia

I have never been one to get excited about workout clothing or mountain gear, or anything super practical. So no one is more surprised than I am that I’m suddenly into Patagonia. I’m just in the mood to have my bag not “say” anything fashiony, and after a particularly bitter cold day last week, I just want a coat that keeps me warm. But just to be clear — these are very specific pieces (all black, too).

I used to carry this Lightweight Travel Tote  on my back (it has straps that cleverly tuck in), purely for practical reasons. Then I recently spotted a cute minimalist-type girl at Ina in all black carrying hers tote bag-style. It looked super Japanese and simple because she took the label off. I asked her if it was Patagonia and she said “Yeah — I  just refuse to carry a heavy bag anymore!” Smart.
My husband got me this one as a gift — it’s just as light as the tote and holds everything, but slings across the body so you barely know it’s there. Note: I took the label off the front but kept the one on the strap, where it looks kind of cool.

I wanted a new parka and the people at Patagonia Surf on Bowery swore this was one of the toastiest. I didn’t really believe them since, a., nothing is ever warm enough for me and b., it’s so incredibly lightweight that it folds into its own pouch. But I loved how plain it was so I figured I should just go for it. I tested it the other day when it was something like 20 below zero, and with the hood up, I couldn’t even tell. I will never second-guess these guys again! Note: I got the men’s version — the xs fit perfectly but looked a little dorky, so I bought mine one size up and it’s much cuter (plus I can fit more layers under it).

Patagonia makes some of the best products. When I rock climbed they were a 1st choice!

Before I moved to Portland, Oregon from California, I didn’t care about coats (well, I loved cute jackets), pants other than jeans, or anything fleece. 17 years later, I can’t wait to see the new, sporty coats, pants, sweaters, fleece, and wool. Hooray for sporty and pretty!

So glad to see this post! I’ve eschewed heavy bags for years. Kind of goes against the philosophy and goals of Pilates (I’m an instructor) to carry something so terrible for the back! My coworkers and I have loved the “Big Buddha” brand of vegan bags for years. Very lightweight, cheap, and adorable…and if you’re in the mood to stray from black, (they have crazy colors) what better way to go than cheap and cute?

So chic! I have to get the this nylon travel tote, much better than a lot of the cotton totes I see, and would work with any leather bag as well!
