Best of the Week: 7/28/17

I’ve been seeing a lot of cute, stylish girls sporting the plain utilitarian black Dansko shoe clogs once reserved for waitresses and nurses. I mean it is way hipper to be comfortable than to teeter around the cobblestones in four inch heels. Anyway, after seeing how cute they look with some plain jeans and a tee or floaty top, I kind of want some. When I went to check them out, I got super excited about the distressed honey, which feels lighter and somehow cuter with jeans (even black ones).

My friend Koyuki raved about this stuff in the “what makes you feel pretty” roundup last week, so I had to get my own jar. And she was right — Glow Butter is nothing short of a miracle. It’s made with ingredients like Tupelo beeswax, organic coconut and avocado oils, patchouli, and geranium oil by foxy mom Kimberly Howell right in her house in Brooklyn (where she actually renders the beeswax herself!). I use it on my face and body and I’m telling you my skin feels so much softer and the “your skin is GLOWING!” comments came rolling in the day after I first used it. Worth its weight in gold of you ask me.
You’re supposed to only wear one of these gold-filled abstract female form earrings, a collab by Knobbly Studio and artist and tattooer Laurie Franck. I bought two and wear them as a pair ’cause I’m kooky like that.

I found some pretty great wide-leg jeans at Uniqlo the other day, and for under $40 you can get that whole Jesse Kamm look and have some money left over for a nice dinner out.
If you dream of living the bohemian life by the beach, buy Surf Shack, LaidBack Living by the Water. I can sit on the couch and pore over this thing for hours, dreaming of being as cool as all the people in it. Plus it was co-written by my friend and Lucky alumna, Heather Summerville.

I’ve been wearing the Danskos in distressed grey all summer. Great if you have an indoor job over the summer and want to be sockless and not clunky-black on the feet!

Hey, Andrea! Those Uniqlo wide leg jeans are amazing. What is the sizing like? Did you size up or down or nab your typical size?

I haven’t gotten them yet. I would say true to size as Uniqlo usually is!

I agree with you – Danskos can be *super* cute! Like so many other things, it’s all about how you style them (exception: Crocs).

Not sure I can get behind Danskos 🙂 it might be my Berkeley upbringing, they just scream dowdy old lady to me… I guess my question is, what do you guys think of those soles? I think I prefer the real wood look of Maguba or Bryr clogs but was thinking maybe the plastic is more comfortable? Does it look super plasticy in person?

I like the look of real wood better too, but bopping around the city in rubber soles is heaven on the feet!

I have these for work and find them super comfortable for that, it’s obviously not wood looking up close, but looks fine from a distance, like no one is going to think you are wearing no.6 but it also doesn’t look like plastic? I don’t understand how women walk around all day in Danskos / clogs in general though. I am fine wearing them at work, or meandering around my neighborhood but if I had to actually walk a long distance I would not pick these shoes!

In the NE blackout of 2003, I found myself sitting in my dark office in Bed-Stuy, wondering how I was going to get to my apartment in Morningside Heights. I caught a bus to the Brooklyn Bridge and then walked to 109th street…in my Dankso clogs! No idea how many miles that was. I was so thankful that I decided to wear those Danskos that day as I saw women all around me taking off their heels and walking barefoot (yuck). I agree that they are sort of utilitarian-cute!

I love Dansko clogs for standing, but anytime I did a lot of walking working retail (worked in a grocery store and had to run all over the place for 8 hrs) I’d get pretty nasty blisters under the ball of my toe- those things are HEAVY. Might just be me/my feet, since I do ok if I wear them commuting (bus to metro to 10 min walk to my office) and at my office job.

I work in a lab sometimes and go on multi-day audits (lots of walking) other times. Dansko/Sanitas are my long-day, getting-all-my-steps-in work shoes. And when I tore both heels open walking around NYC in Frye boots in January, they were the only shoes I could wear without blinding pain for about 3 days. So, yeah, I’d be down with a second pair in honey or gray!
